Hongjie Yu, in his sermons, advocates a trichotomous view of salvation, asserting that humans consist of spirit, soul, and body, with salvation progressing in stages from the spirit to the soul and finally the body. He posits that after the spirit is saved, the soul must cooperate with God through renewed thoughts, purified emotions, and a subdued will to achieve salvation. However, this perspective is contentious, as it implies salvation requires human cooperation, potentially undermining the absolute nature of God’s grace and diverging from the Bible’s holistic revelation. In Scripture, "spirit" and "soul" are often interchangeable, and salvation is presented as a complete, one-time act for the whole person, not a phased process. Yu’s teachings inherit the trichotomous tradition of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee, though presented more subtly, yet they risk fragmenting self-understanding, fostering spiritual anxiety, and promoting experientialism. Historically, trichotomy, influenced by Greek philosophy, conflicts with orthodox theologians like Calvin and Luther. Most conservative Christian circles reject this view, advocating a return to biblical truth and upholding the gospel of Christ’s singular, comprehensive redemption while resisting the theological errors of trichotomy.
