Watchman Nee: “The resurrected Lord Jesus cannot be recognized by human eyes.”

This video features Pastor Mark Sun delivering a systematic critique of Watchman Nee’s interpretation of the disciples’ recognition of the resurrected Jesus in John chapter 21. Pastor Mark Sun argues that the disciples initially failed to recognize the figure on the shore not because they needed some mysterious “inward revelation” or special ability, but simply because it was still dark at dawn with poor visibility and distance. Once Jesus instructed them to cast the net on the right side and they miraculously caught a huge haul of fish, they immediately recalled the similar miracle in Luke chapter 5 and naturally realized it was the Lord. Pastor Mark Sun further refutes Nee’s opposition between head knowledge and inward revelation, which downgrades rational Bible reading, pointing out that such a division actually splits the unified person of Christ—fully God and fully man—leading believers to undervalue Scripture’s authority and chase inexplicable mystical experiences instead. The message urgently calls Christians to rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance while using their minds to study the Bible, thereby building a solid foundation of faith and avoiding the dangerous path of mysticism. It reminds viewers that Scripture alone is fully sufficient for knowing the Lord, receiving salvation, and following Him.

You Are Not the Grain of Wheat” Watchman Nee Misunderstood Jesus’ Parable

The Twelve Baskets begins by examining Watchman Nee’s well-known teaching in “The Breaking of the Outer Man and the Release of the Spirit.” Nee interprets John 12:24—the parable of the grain of wheat—as referring to the believer’s outer shell being broken so that the inner “spirit life” may flow out. Yet the biblical text clearly points to Christ Himself, who declared that “the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” The grain represents Jesus, whose death on the cross would bring forth many new lives—believers redeemed by His blood. This message exposes the theological distortion in Nee’s allegorical reading, which replaces the gospel of grace with a mystical path of self-crucifixion. Such teaching blurs the distinction between the Creator and the creature, drawing attention inward rather than to Christ’s finished work. Through careful exegesis and a scientific explanation of how a seed germinates, the sermon demonstrates that the “death” of the grain refers to the sacrificial death of Christ, not to the believer’s emotional or psychological “breaking.” True spirituality, therefore, does not come from self-inflicted suffering or inner experiences, but from being united with Christ in His death and resurrection. Only through this union can believers bear fruit that glorifies God.
