The Counseling Triad: Fear, Escapism, and Anger

The Entrance of Fear, Escapism, and Anger

Notice that, after the fall, Adam and Eve were consumed with a dreadful fear of God, which resulted in a desire to escape from the presence of God.

This showed itself as they: 这由以下行为体现出来:

1. Covered themselves with fig leaves (Genesis

2. Hid from God (Genesis

Adam and Eve’s response offers a framework for the way that all sinners respond to their pressing sense of guilt and shame.

But, note that Adam and Eve’s first responses to their sin were mostly non-threatening to other lives.

In Genesis 4, we are introduced to Adam and Eve’s first two children, Cain and Abel.

Cain was consumed by envy for his younger brother, and he was angry that God accepted Abel’s sacrifice while rejecting Cain’s.

Cain’s volcanic anger soon drove him to murder his brother (Genesis

Thus, one sees that Adam and Eve’s initial response to their sin has now become even worse through Cain.

Now, for the first time, murder entered the creation.

Now all life is threatened on account of sin.

Thus, God offers us a glimpse into just how serious ungodly anger is.

So, Adam and Eve’s initial sin of fear and escape has now risen to a new level with Cain, murderous anger.

Sin continues to expand with horrifying results.

It is important to notice that all sin, whether ungodly fear, escapism, or godless anger, is a with-regard-to-God issue.

Thus, these sins do not arise in a vacuum.

Each is a direct response to God’s presence and holiness.

Thus, for example, the addict specifically seeks to escape from the presence of God in his life, desperate to suppress his conscience, and deny his need for repentance and faith.

This look at Adam, Eve, and Cain offers a glimpse into the depraved heart – a heart consumed by three issues:

1. Fear

2. Escape 逃避

3. Anger

This is the order in which the Scripture introduces them, showing an increasing intensity to sin, and that sin progressively brings more serious consequences.

Three Major Counseling Issues

People who seek out counseling generally seek it for one of three issues:

1. Fear (paranoia, panic attacks, anxiety, etc.) Escapism (overeating, drug or sexual addiction, escape into movies or social media, etc.)

3. Anger (explosive or violent anger, brooding, bitterness, complaining, etc.) 愤怒 (勃然大怒、暴力、苦毒、抱怨等) These three issues tend to dominate our time, energy and attention.

As you counsel others, look for this triad to show itself time and again.

The Growth of Fear

27:1: Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

6:34: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

These two statements seem to be the opposite, but they actually arise from the same heart, a heart that relies on itself.

To boast about tomorrow is really to boast about one’s own ability, the hope of a good future in one’s own effort.

To worry about tomorrow arises when one comes to the realization that his boasting is in vain.

Thus, God’s direction in each of these statements is that one is to give his tomorrow to God, to trust that he is in control regardless of one’s current circumstances.

The one who relies on himself, who puts the most trust in his ability to shape his future, is the one who is most prone to worry about it.

This person is also the most prone to anger with regard to this future, because rarely does one’s future follow the plans he sets for it.

Put another way, the more one relies upon himself, his own abilities and resources, the more he will worry about his future, and the more he will be prone to anger when his future does not match his expectations.

One of God’s greatest gifts to his people is to continually put them into a position in which they must rely upon him.

Satan’s Mimicry: Fear

Fear which is driven by Satan is: 由撒旦引动的恐惧是:

1. Anxious

2. Lies about our future

Those who are fearful have sold themselves to a lie.

The lie is that their future is not secure in Christ.

We often to false means to manage our fears, hoping to gain control of them through our own efforts.

However, such efforts always prove futile, as fear will again show itself regardless of our attempts to mitigate it.

The Issue of Escapism 逃避

In recent times, escapism most readily shows itself in the smart phone, surfing the web, or scrolling through social media sites.

Modern people often focus on the next news item, or the next text message.

This creates an undercurrent of anxiety in one’s life, as one is increasingly obsessed with the next bit of information.

The smart phone is one of the Christian’s greatest enemies, since it distracts them from the love of God and others, often tempting them to self-obsession.

Escapism is taking refuge in a false savior.

We search for something to make us feel good, accepted, and pleasing to others.

As Satan keeps people mired in escapism, he keeps them away from the real Savior.

The Issue of Anger

Christians generally look negatively on all anger.

Thus, many Christians have trained themselves not to openly express anger (volcanic anger), but to smother it, allowing it to smolder inside (often called “white anger”).

(Of course, anger is not always sinful, and often can be expressed in a God honoring way, which means that it is expressed in a controlled manner, with God’s greater purposes in mind.)

Anger as Indicative of Worship

When angry, most of people explain their anger by blaming things or people (“She made me angry…”;”This traffic jam made me crazy…”).

We may be quick to blame anger on situations, or eve on a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Such false explanations, always keep us blind to the source of our anger.

In fact, the more we look for external cause to our anger, the more enslaved we will become to it.

That is why James 4:1, 2 admonishes those who are easily angered to analyze their worship commitments.

To understand your anger, there is only one way, look at what motivates your heart. Anger arises from within us.

The heart continually makes decisions about what to be angry about.

Anger is not a built up “pressure” that we must release.

Rather, anger arises from worship commitments, and is then acted upon.

The battles which rage within us arise because of unmet desires which have morphed into demands.

When demands (or perceived needs) go unmet, we are quick to go to war to get those demands met.

Are you angry because your name has been disgraced, or are you angry because God’s name has been disgraced?

There is a massive difference between these two.

Satan’s Mimicry: Anger

Satan mimics God.

When anger mimics God, but does not go to God for repentance and deliverance, it becomes:

2. Aggressive

3. Condemning 定罪

4. Demanding 要求

5. A false judge

6. Malicious

7. Merciless

8. Self-righteousness 自义

9. Vindictive

This is an accurate picture of godless anger.

Godless anger is an attempt to place oneself into the position of God.

Satan’s Mimicry

(image:please read it from https://h-land.us/blog/228419)

This chart shows that man was created as a king, priest, and prophet.

However, in man’s sin, he perverts these three stations, abusing his image-bearing abilities.

So, at the fall, man fell into fear, escapism, and anger.

1. Satan exploits man’s role as a truth-teller, so that man is consumed by paralyzing fear, and thus becomes a false prophet.

2. Satan exploits man’s ability to bring comfort and blessing, so that man instead turns to escapes as a false form of salvation.

3. Satan exploits man’s position of authority, so that godless anger becomes the expression of a false king.

The World 世界

The world agrees with, and amplifies, every one of Satan’s lies.

So, the world is designed to amplify each of these false view of man.

For example: 例如:

1. The world is also skilled at feeding our fears.

The world’s object is that your should always be afraid of something.

The reason is that fearful people are quick to turn to the world for deliverance.

People who are fearful, and those who desire escape, are quick to spend money.

The world tempts people to overspend as a way to keep them in slavery to gaining more money.

2. The world is skilled at crafting escapes.

This occurs through convincing people that: 这借着让人相信:

a. A particular place 某个地方

b. A purchase 购物

c. An experience 经历

Will bring refuge from our anxiety and futility.

3. The world tends to define anger for us, peddling a story about what should make us angry.

(Most television storylines revolve around anger, so that as we watch such stories unfold, godless anger becomes normalized in our thinking.)

The Flesh 肉体

We have drawn attention to Satan’s work.

1. The intimidation (to feed fear)

2. The enticement (to indulge in escapes)

3. The lie (to feed anger (or fear))

However, we don’t want to give Satan too much credit.

The Bible’s overwhelming focus is on our flesh.

As sinners, we: 作为罪人的我们:

1. Cower under the intimidation

2. Give ourselves to the enticement

3. Willingly to buy the lie

1. We listen to Satan’s false prophecies about ourselves, and about our futures, and refuse to turn to God for the truth.

2. We falsely believe that we can find a means of salvation outside of Jesus.

3. In our sinful flesh, we imitate Satan as a false judge and accuser.

Counseling the Fearful Person

Fear is generally a projection into the future and determining that the future is harmful.

Who teaches us to project in this way? Satan, the author of lies, is the fabricator of falsehoods about God and ourselves.

As with anger, psychology sees anxiety as a purely internal problem.

However, anxiety is a relational problem. Consider that anxiety is actually a form of stealing.

It is an attempt to rob God of his sovereignty.

Additionally, the anxious person robs himself of God’s grace in his own life, the joy, peace, and assurance that God promises to those who belong to him.

Counseling the Fearful Person

Those who are anxious are isolated from God and others.

Anxiety makes one insular and self-obsessed.

It hinders one from caring about others.

When God issued the Ten Commandments, he attached warnings to them.

However, when God commands his people not to fear, he does not attach warnings, only promises (See Deuteronomy 31:6-8; Jeremiah 1:8; Matthew 14:27; Philippians 4:4-7).

Counseling the Addict

The church generally thinks that certain addictions are “normal,” and no cause for alarm.

1. Eating 吃

2. Shopping 购物

Once the addiction seems to be to something more serious, then many Christians wrongly believe that demon possession is involved.

Every addiction, no matter how seemingly harmless, is a seed sown to our own destruction.

Addiction are broken through the following means:

2. Forgiveness of sins

3. Growth in holiness 成圣

This is what Jesus intended when he called Paul to turn people “from the power of Satan to God” (Acts

By God’s grace, not every addiction does result in one’s destruction, but it is crucial that the Christian recognize the idols behind his addiction, and repent of them.

But, it is crucial to understand that: 但是关键是要明白:

1. The less we repent

2. The less we seek God’s forgiveness

3. The less we desire to grow in holiness

the more readily we will turn to addictions as a false means of escape, or as a false means of managing fear.

Counseling the Angry Person

Psychology presents the idea that anger is only inside of the angry person.

The Bible has a broader perspective.《

The Bible presents the idea that anger exists between people.

Thus, anger is not just a psychological problem.

It is a relational problem, a problem first between the angry person and God (a with-regard-to-God issue), and secondarily between the angry person and others.

It is crucial to understand that sinfully angry people are first angry at God.

So, when we counsel an angry person, ask him why is he angry at God.

What was God supposed to do for him? (Consider Jonah who was angry at God for sending him to preach to the Ninevites.)

Angry people have invariably placed demands upon God.

Sinners are not victims of their anger (as psychology presents); they are perpetrators of their anger (as the Bible presents).

Satan works in the corporate, relational dimension.

Our anger and bitterness give Satan the foothold he looks for (Ephesians 4:26, 27).

The Christian is counseled to see himself on a larger stage.

He is part of how the kingdom of God is coming to this world.

Thus, the Christian is called to live up to that high calling and responsibility.

Part of that calling and responsibility is to forgive, and to be a peacemaker.

Satan loves conflict between people because this keeps them beleaguered and embattled.

So, Satan does everything possible to thwart forgiveness and to disparage peacemaking.

However, forgiveness is the hallmark of a Christian.

The Christian is quick to forgive and thus quick to take on the role of peacemaker.

This arises because the Christian recognizes that he has first been forgiven.

The world tends to promote an angry spirit in people.

This occurs through promoting oneself, pursuing one’s own desires, building self-esteem, and seeking one’s own pleasure.

Such an approach to life creates warmakers, not peacemakers, since those who pursue their own desires tend to go to war with others to get those desires met.

Those in the grip of anger have a demonic aspect to themselves (James 3:13-18), but there is no demon of anger.

As we give ourselves over to godless anger, we more and more resemble Satan, and Satan exploits our anger (Ephesians 以弗所书 4:27). However, our anger is our own doing as we wrongly exalt ourselves as judge.

(Image 2: read it from https://h-land.us/blog/228419)

Notes with the Diagram

Moment-by-moment, we each are faced with choices concerning to whom we will surrender ourselves.

We either surrender ourselves to Satan, and live out his lies and murderous ways, or we surrender ourselves to God, and live out his truth and life-giving ways.

Thus, maybe hundreds of times each day we are each tempted to anger, escape, and fear.

We make decisions to either accept or reject such responses to our world.

As soon as we take a step toward fear, escapism, or anger, Satan exploits that, and capitalizes on it.

Thus, Satan is ready to magnify the sinful response that we have chosen, and built on it for his purposes.

In this way, Satan is at work cultivating disciples.

He seeks to increase his stranglehold on as many as possible.

Those who walk in the flesh give themselves over to Satan and his will.

They soon find that they are more prone to surrendering their will to Satan.

Thus, walking in the flesh makes one more prone to continuing to walk in the flesh.

In this way, Satan strengthens his influence.

17:5: This is what the LORD says: "Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who depends on flesh for his strength and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

On the other side, God’s deliverance is found in making choices to surrender to Christ.

Thus, the Christian can choose to respond with Christ, not matter what he faces.

As he responds with Christ, he finds that Christ is magnified within him.

Additionally, Satan is forced to flee (James

Thus, responding in godliness makes it easier to continue to respond in godliness.

Put another way, the one who walks in the Spirit is being discipled and shaped to continue walking in the Spirit.

Thus, walking in the Spirit becomes an inclination of the heart.

(Image 3: read it from https://h-land.us/blog/228419)

Notes with the Diagram

In this diagram notice that the left side is darkened.

This represents that as one persists in repentance, forgiveness, and growth in holiness, and as one desires to walk in the Holy Spirit, and actually does it, that there is an inclination of the heart to that.

Thus, one less and less turns to Satan’s methods, lies, deceptions, enticements, and no longer cowers to his intimidation.

However, notice that the left side is not completely eradicated.

There is a lingering sinful flesh within the Christian that will not be fully removed until heaven.

So, the Christian finds that walking in faith and holiness, begets greater faith and holiness.

25:29: For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

The one who continues to follow Satan becomes like a dried up bush in the desert, barely alive and unable to offer life to anything, or anyone.

This accurately describes those who are trapped in fear, escapism or anger.

On the other hand, the one who continues in the path of the Holy Spirit is like a life-giving fountain of water, offering abundant refreshment to everything and everyone.

Restoring the Concept of Choice

One of the goals of counseling is to restore to people the concept of choice, that they are choosing paths of death or life, moment-by-moment.

Those who are trapped in fear, escapism, or anger rarely feel that they are making choices.

They feel that they have a “disease.” However, they are called to make a choice to submit to Jesus.

Allowing Jesus to have control of one’s life is one’s own choice.

God’s Plan for Change

The coming of the king (Jesus) was not to make our agenda work, but to lead us to the greatness of wonder and glory in Jesus himself.

That is the purpose of our lives, to experience the greatness of Jesus.

What is the principle objective of God’s kingdom?

It is God complete change within people, from the inside out.

The agenda of this kingdom is to transform our hearts, to change who, and what, we live for.
