试探

Temptation

Satan’s Wiles

Satan has great ability to lay snares before Christians.

He has long experience in how to ensnare men.

He knows their ways, and their hearts’ desires.

He has made it his whole study, his only study, his constant study, to find out strategies which draw men into a net of depravity, from which they cannot extricate themselves.

Satan’s Temptations

1.When struggling with need

When living in prosperity

2. When sick

When healthy

3. When weak and suffering

When strong and happy

4. When alone

When with others

When Satan was a new serpent, he easily deceived and outwitted Eve (Genesis

Eve was outwitted because she stopped listening to the Word of God and, instead, listened to her own reason.

In the same way, when Christians stop listening to the Word of God, and start listening to their own reason, they are easily tempted to sin.

Satan now has a long history of experience, and his ways have grown increasingly sophisticated.

Satan has grown into an “ancient serpent” (Revelation

He is as old as the world, and has grown very cunning.

With all that said, James 1:14 is careful to point out that though Satan lays the trap, each of us is ensnared by his own evil desire, which drags him away.

Thus, the sinful heart is to blame for its own sin.

Man has such an evil root within him, that were there no devil to tempt him, no world to entice him, he would still sin.

The Depraved Heart

Man’s:  人的

1. Understanding is dark

2. Memory is selective, and self-exonerating

3. Emotions are wrongly applied (He laughs when he should cry; he is enraged when he should be self-effacing, etc.)

4. Conscience is corrupted

5. Tongue is poisoned

6. Heart is wholly evil, only evil, and continually evil

We provide the flame, Satan offers more wood, and the world supplies the oxygen.

Satan can never undo a man without that man’s desire to sin.

However, a man may easily undo himself without Satan’s work.

The sinner must not excuse himself by accusing Satan.

The Start of Temptation

Abraham told Sarah, his wife, “Say you are my sister” (Genesis

Temptations often start by calling things by the wrong name (1 Corinthians

Instead of naming all things as God has, man, in his foolishness, renames all things according to his own sinful understanding.

Faulty renaming is the first step in falling into temptation.

Additionally, faulty renaming creates a covering for sin, so that it festers and grows.

Sin is given an appealing name to make it undetected as sin:

Sin 罪

An Appealing Label

1. Antinomianism

Freedom 自由

2. Arrogance 自大

Self-confidence 自信

3. Complaining

Sharing 分享

4. Covetousness

Curiosity  好奇

5. Envy

Ambition 雄心

6. Idolatry

Passion 激情

7. Lust of the flesh

Needs 需要

8. Lying 说谎

Practicality 实用性

9. Obsession

Perseverance

10. Sexual immorality 性罪

Love 爱

11. Superstition 迷信

Worship

2:13: This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

Temptations As False Promises

The temptation to grumble is a promise that if you can be your own god, and have your own way, you will be happy.

Grumbling is a form of rebellion against God’s perceived incompetence.

The temptation of sexual immorality is the promise of gaining wholeness through perversion.

The temptation to the love of money is the temptation to gain control of one’s future without God.

16:11: You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

3:5, 6:Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

4:19: And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Areas of Great Temptation

Areas of Great Temptation

1. Anger 发怒

James

2. Complaint

3. Envy

4. Revenge 报复

Romans

Colossians

5. Sexuality 性

1 Corinthians

How Temptation Leads to Sinful Acts

1.Stimulus

The temptation may be triggered by something visual, auditory, or by something that simply comes to mind.

2. Excitement

The temptation feels intense, and elicits strong emotion.

3. Invitation

We deliberately decide to invite the temptation in, to enjoy its company.

This is the crucial inflexion point in which one actively invites the temptation to take up residence in his heart.

4. Fantasy  幻想

We retain, and enjoy, the stimulus, and build a story of conquest and comfort around it.

We falsely believe that the temptation’s false promise could become a story of winning.

5. Struggle

For the Christian, there is a cry of the soul for freedom from the temptation.

The Christian recognizes that this is not what he was made for, and not what he is destined for.

This struggle is a good sign.

It means that the Holy Spirit is present, and at work, to draw the Christian away from the temptation.

6. Sinful acts

Sinful acts and words now arise from a heart that has been sold to the temptation.

Step 3, invitation, is the critical point.

This is also the point at which we are most likely to be deceived, or to deceive ourselves.

With our underlying belief that the sinful action or words are the “real” sin, we tell ourselves that a little bit of fantasy won’t hurt much, so long as we do not act on it.

This is where we are most open to the voices that tell us, “You deserve some pleasure, some relaxation, something better in life than what God has given you.”

Allowing temptation any foothold into the heart is dangerous, as that foothold will become more entrenched over time.

Warning Against Tempting Others

18:6, 7: ‘But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!’

Struggle is crucial for the Christian to overcome temptation.

This means that the Christian goes to battle within his heart to overcome the temptation.

However, that is not a battle fought in his own strength.

Rather, it is a battle that the Holy Spirit fights and which the Christian participates in.

The Christian cooperates with the Holy Spirit’s work, through submitting to the Holy Spirit (Galatians

In other words, everyone must surrender his will either to his flesh or to the Holy Spirit, the former leads to death, the latter to life.

Are you selling yourself like a slave to temptation, or are you living the abundant life in Christ, victorious over sin and death?

Warning Against Continuing in Sin

18:8, 9: ‘If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.’

This offers the Christian a picture of the figurative violence with which he is to do battle within his heart.

Application  应用

1. What temptation particularly draws you?

In other words, what is your trigger to fall into sin?

2. What kinds of emotions quickly draw you further into the temptation?

3. What kinds of false stories are you quick to create around the temptation?

4. How do you resolve your struggle with the temptation?

Whom, and what, do you enlist for help?

5. What does it look like for you to say “No” to temptation, and to run from it?

There are times when it is right to physically run from temptation, as Joseph did when Potiphar’s wife tempted him (Genesis

However, within his heart, the Christian continually runs temptation, not inviting it, not creating a story around it, and quickly enlisting the Holy Spirit’s power to overcome it.

False Approaches to Temptation

There are three false approaches to temptation:

1. “The Superman Method”

This is moralistic self-exertion, which means that one tries in his own strength to overcome temptation.

Such a person exerts great energy, using various cognitive techniques.

However such exertion is only out of pride, the false confidence that one does not need God’s help to avoid sin.

However, tragically this person finally falls into the temptation that he tries so hard to avoid.

The disciple, Peter’s, confidence that he would never deny Jesus is an example (Matthew

2:20-23: Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

Man’s unaided efforts at avoiding sin are doomed to failure, because they lack any power to transform the heart.

The concept of Dame Folly comes from the book of Proverbs, in which an adulterous woman tries to entice the young man to wed himself to her (Proverbs

This is the way of unbridled indulgence.

This person does not even try to resist temptation, but gives himself to it.

Such a person may reason that he is powerless against sin anyway, so why not just enjoy its pleasures.

He may also reason that if he just indulges in sin a little, the desire for it will disappear.

This is never the case.

Samson is a good example.

3. “The Young Rich Ruler Method”  “富有的少年官”法

Remember that Jesus confronted the young rich ruler with his love for money (Matthew

That man then went away sad, because he had great wealth, and he refused to part with it (Matthew

That sadness may characterize one faced with temptation.

Such a person’s depression arises from feeling powerless to resist temptation.

He simply retreats into a cocoon of self-denial, with no sense of hope.

Like the young rich ruler, one faced with temptation may feel its enslaving effect, yet convinces himself that there is no hope of deliverance.

(However, Jesus was willing to help the young rich ruler, if he had asked for deliverance.)

Notes with the Diagram

1. Notice that the “superman” futilely attempts to overcome temptation in his own strength.

The circle, and arrow’s shaded interior, point to the inner depravity which is still operative, while the purple outline points to the appearance of noble character.

The superman can never overcome temptation over a lifetime, and so the arrow is dashed to show that his efforts may, at times, have the appearance of success, but are finally impotent.

2. “Dame Folly” runs straight into temptation, indulging his sensuality and desire.“糊涂先生”直接进入试探,沉迷于他的性感和欲望。

The orange color indicates that such a person is ruled by the lust of the flesh.

3. The “young rich ruler” recognizes that he is powerless against temptation, but has neither the resources, nor the strength, to find hope.

False Justification for Temptation

False Justification for Temptation

Superman  超人

One can use self-determination and willpower to ensure his own freedom from any sin.

Dame Folly

1.Supposed emotional needs that must be met

2. Believing that indulging the temptation is necessary to have a good life

3. Perceived revenge for wrongs in life 对生活中的错误进行报复

4. It would be best to conform to the culture.

5. The feeling that one can just get the temptation over with

6. A sense of abandonment from God, and that therefore one has a right to take control of his life

The Young Rich Ruler

Despair that the temptation can never be overcome

The Christian’s Hope

The Christian rightly avoids these three faulty approaches to temptation.

The Christian relies upon God’s grace, trusting him to enable the Christian to overcome temptation in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Thus, the Christian is not foolishly bold in the face of temptation, but he is also not depressed.

He places confidence in Christ to deliver him safely through.

The Christian recognizes Jesus as his mediator and intercessor (Romans 罗马书 8:34; Hebrews 希伯来书 7:25), so he remain joyful in the face of temptation.

A Case Study: The Temptation to Computer Games

Imagine that one is tempted to play computer games.

He knows that this is a waste of his time, and that it is fruitless,  producing nothing good in one’s life.

Such a temptation is like a poison to one’s soul.

The superman pridefully exerts will-power to resist the temptation.

Dame Folly says, “Don’t fight the temptation. Just enjoy yourself, and have fun while you can.”

The young rich ruler feels depressed that the temptation faces him, and he has no way to resist it.

How does the sanctified Christian respond to such a temptation?

1.The Christian submits to Jesus, giving his will over to Jesus.

2. The Christian trusts that Jesus has good things for him in the course of this day.

118:24: This is the day that the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.

God calls each of his people to work for his kingdom, a blessed work far greater than anything we plan for ourselves.

3. The knowledge that God is present, calling the Christian to himself, and holding forth blessing to the Christian, is a first step in resisting temptation.

4. Knowing that God goes to battle for the Christian, and knowing that God offers the Christian victory over temptation, gives the Christian power to resist temptation.

The Christian takes steps to free himself from the temptation, such as deleting the computer games, or turning away from the computer entirely.

5. The Christian continually prays that Jesus will give him the strength to resist this temptation.

6. There is continual repentance for wanting to gain anything from the computer games, that one should only gain from God himself.

7. The Christian looks for God’s hand, leading him in what God would have him do to gain victory.

8. The Christian relies upon God’s power to sustain him, and deliver him, moment by moment (Psalm

9. As the Christian resists this temptation, and experiences small, momentary, successes, it becomes easier to gain new and greater successes over the temptation.

10. The Christian learns to more quickly turn to God when temptation faces him, with the full knowledge that God is good, and has power to give the Christian victory.

Every one of us is daily tempted to break each of the Ten Commandments.

We turn to God for help throughout the day, and we are delighted to find that God is very close, and eager to deliver us from temptation (1 Corinthians 哥林多前书 10:13).

Satan Tempted Jesus

Twice Satan said to Jesus, “If you are the Son of God” (Matthew

Satan and demons know that Jesus is the Son of God (Matthew 马太福音 8:29; Luke 路加福音 4:41; James 雅各书 2:19).

However, Satan sought to tempt Jesus into doubting his identity.

In a similar way, Satan tempts Christians into both doubting their identity, and into doubting God’s promises to them.

Satan’s Ongoing Temptations of Jesus

We tend to wrongly think that Satan only tempted Jesus in the desert (Matthew

We might think that when Jesus successfully overcame that temptation, Satan did not dare to tempt him again.

However, this is not true.

4:13: When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Notice that Satan only left Jesus temporarily.

He would tempt Jesus in the future, at an opportune time.

It seems that Jesus may have frequently been tempted by Satan during his thirty-three years on earth.

4:15: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

The following are some examples of the ways that Satan may have tempted Jesus.

It is important to understand that the following examples are hypothetical.

The Bible does not offer information about these possible temptations.

When Jesus was tempted, this was entirely Satan’s work as the tempter.

Jesus never, even for a moment, considered surrendering to Satan’s temptation.

Additionally, it is important to recognize that to be tempted is not sin.

Sin comes in giving into the temptation.

Keep in mind that, when Jesus was tempted, this in no way implies that Jesus was weak in his faith.

At every moment, Jesus was perfectly faithful, and perfectly obedient, to his Father.

So, to be tempted does not imply weak faith.

The Ten Commandments十诫

Ways that Satan Might Have Tempted Jesus

1.First – worship God alone

Satan might have tempted Jesus to murmur at God’s sovereignty when his friend, John the Baptist, was beheaded at the whim of a dancing girl (Matthew 马太福音 14:9) 当耶稣的朋友施洗约翰因为跳舞女孩的煽风点火而被斩首,撒旦可能会借此试探耶稣对神的主权嘀嘀咕咕。

2. Second – no idols

Satan might have tempted Jesus to make his power and wisdom into an idol, to use these for self-serving purpose.

3. Third – honor God’s name

4. Fourth – honor the Sabbath

5. Fifth – honor father and mother

Satan might have tempted Jesus to dishonor his parents when they scolded him for remaining in the temple (Luke

What about when Jesus’ mother and siblings thought that he was out of his mind? (Mark

Satan might have tempted Jesus to lash out at them.

6. Sixth – to not murder

Satan might have tempted Jesus to take revenge, when he was wrongly accused.

Often the Pharisees spread lies about Jesus (Luke 路加福音 11:15), and with one murderous word, Jesus could have made fools out of them.

7. Seventh – to not commit adultery

Satan may have tempted Jesus to lust when Mary wiped his feet with her hair (John

8. Eighth – to no steal

There were at least five children in Jesus’ family.

Joseph, Jesus’ father, disappeared from the Gospel records very early on.

This means that Mary was left as a widow, and widows always struggled.

Satan may have tempted Jesus to steal to help his family.

9. Ninth - to not give false witness

Imagine Jesus surrounded by soldiers, spears, a cross in the corner, and nails and hammers on the ground (Matthew

When the high priest commanded Jesus, “Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God” (Matthew 马太福音 26:63), Satan may have tempted Jesus to lie to save his life.

10. Tenth – to not covet

Satan might have tempted Jesus to covet the luxuries that Zacchaeus enjoyed.

Even after he gave away half his goods (Luke 路加福音 19:8), Zacchaeus was still a rich man, and Jesus left his home owning nothing.

Satan may have tempted Jesus to covet a home for himself, a place to lay his head each night (Matthew

The point is this section is that Satan must have frequently tempted Jesus to sin.

Yet, Jesus overcame each temptation with perfect obedience to his Father.

In this way, Jesus knew the power and persuasion of temptation far better than anyone, because he resisted it the longest, without giving into it.

Jesus understood better than anyone the nature of the spiritual battle seeking to cause him (and us) to sin.

This is why Jesus is our perfect intercessor (Romans 罗马书 8:34; Hebrews 希伯来书 7:25).

The reason that Jesus is our perfect intercessor with the Father, is because Jesus knows the fullness of the temptation that we face.

Before Jesus’ incarnation, he had never experienced temptation, and therefore, did not know what it meant to be tempted.

Thus, through becoming fully human, Jesus learned what it means to be human (Hebrews

Jesus endured every temptation that we daily face, and he perfectly overcame it.

This is why we can turn to him for help, with full assurance that he will help us.

When the sinner gives in to temptation, that temptation is no longer a battlefield on which he learns to fight in the Holy Spirit.

So, only the one who resists temptation and overcomes it, truly understands the battle with sin, and what it means to live in the Spirit’s power (Galatians 加拉太书 5:25).

How to Deal With Temptation

10:13: No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

This crucial promise gives the Christian great hope that every temptation, no matter what it is, has a path of escape.

This means that the Christian should pray, and search for this path, anticipating it.

Notice that, when faced with temptation from Potiphar’s wife, Joseph simply ran from that temptation (Genesis

His heart was already prepared in how to respond to such temptation.

He saw the figurative path out, and he immediately took it.

In this verse, we often overlook the phrase “common to man.”

This phrase should end much of our excuse-making.

Our tendency as sinners is to want to believe that our temptation is not common to man, that our lives are unique.

We want to believe that, therefore, if we sin, it is not really our fault, because no one can possibly understand the unique challenges we face.

To believe that our temptation is “common,” takes away our ability to exonerate ourselves.

When we sin, we create false stories which seek to remove the guilt of our sin (some way to exonerate ourselves from guilt).

However, 1 Corinthians 10:13, strips away our ability to create those false stories.

We are brought into the true story of Christ, and so, our false stories, no longer deceive us.

1. A life of repentance for ongoing, deeply-entrenched sin

The continually repentant man is a wise man, because he rightly understands the methods and madness of his own heart.

Thus, one who continually repents, seems himself continually freed.

Those who are self-confident, and who love themselves, foolishly fall into every trap set for them.

They are easily enticed, and their lives imperiled.

3:3: For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh--  因为真受割礼的,乃是我们这以神的灵敬拜,在基督耶稣里夸口,不靠着肉体的。

2. The Word of God

The Word of God is a mighty sword which pierces through lies and deception (Hebrews

The Word of God will prove to be a fortress and tower for dealing with all that one faces in life.

The Christian never faces any life event that is not addressed in Scripture.

And, thus, in every step of life, Scripture offers a sure footing and path.

Put another way, Scripture is fully prepared to navigate you through anything that you face today (2 Timothy

In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus responded to each of Satan’s temptations using God’s words alone.

Even, Jesus, the Son of God, did not rely upon his own words, when tempted by Satan.

He only used the eternal Word of God to repel Satan (Matthew

Notice also that Satan, too, knows the Word of God (Matthew 马太福音4:6), and twists it for his purposes.

In the garden, Eve added to what God said (Genesis 创世记 3:3), and Satan twisted what God had said (Genesis 创世记 3:1, 4, 5).

In a similar way, the devil tempted Jesus, quoting Scripture selectively, and not balancing it with the rest of the Old Testament’s teachings on subjects such as not putting God to the test, true worship, and how the Lord sustains His people.

And how did Jesus defeat Satan?

By knowing God’s Word in all its fullness, and not setting one portion against another.

Jesus interpreted Scripture by Scripture, thus knowing and using Scripture’s true meaning against the enemy.

By overcoming Satan’s temptation, Jesus succeeded where Adam failed in Eden, and our salvation was made possible.

Jesus also gave an example for us.

To resist temptation, we must know and live by God’s Word.

When temptation arises, the Holy Spirit also causes Scripture to arise in our hearts, as well.

That Scripture repels the temptation, so that the temptation loses its force and attraction.

Scripture becomes a guard to us as we face many temptations.

The first Adam faced Satan’s temptations in a bountiful garden, and failed (Genesis

The second Adam (Jesus) faced Satan’s temptations in a desolate wilderness, and succeeded (Matthew

Jesus succeeded where Adam failed, because He trusted the Word of God.

Satan twisted God’s Word in tempting Adam and Eve, and caused them to doubt.

He also twisted God’s Word in tempting Jesus, but Jesus did not falter.

A significant point is that one’s environment has nothing to do with either obedience, or rebellion.

Adam and Eve were placed in a lush garden, with every possible pleasure, and they rebelled.

Jesus was placed in a harsh and desolate wilderness, with every kind of discomfort, and he obeyed (Hebrews

Thus, the sinner can never point to his environment as the cause of his sin.

3. The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit enables the Christian to discover Satan’s plots against himself, and against the church.

The Holy Spirit continually warns the Christian of danger, and offers him a sure path out of that danger.

If the Christian quenches the Holy Spirit, through his own love of his sin, then he is like a blind man stumbling at the edge of a high cliff.

His life will surely be imperiled, as he continues in his blindness.

As the Christian walks in the Spirit, he more quickly discerns Satan’s snares, so that he can avoid them more quickly, and more surely.

However, the Christian must actively ask for wisdom, and walk in that wisdom.

As he entertains his own lust of the flesh, the wisdom within him is weakened and ineffectual.

How to Deal With Temptation

1. If one is weak in his understanding of God’s Word…

…then he should avoid getting into a dispute on matters he knows little about.

2. If one knows that particular places or activities make him susceptible to temptation…

…then he should avoid such places and activities.  …

3. If one knows that particular people anger him, or irritate him…

…then he should avoid meeting such people. …

The point is that the Christian’s faith is not reckless.

There is no faith in bringing upon oneself needless risks.

God seeks to protect the Christian from sin, and sometimes that means taking prudent measures to avoid sin.

However, it should also be noted that if, for example, God does bring people into one’s life, who tend to make him angry or irritated, there is a good reason for this.

God always seeks to expose the heart, so that genuine repentance would take place.

That often means that God brings trials into our lives for a greater good, and for a larger purpose.

4. The Christian is commanded to resist temptation, but not to reason with it.

Eve argued out of her own reason, and was outwitted.

Job resisted, and was finally a conqueror.

He that will play with Satan’s bait, will quickly be taken with Satan’s hook.

4:7: Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Those who are skilled at resisting find that their temptations become fewer.

Those who seek to reason with temptation, find that it soon has them bound hand and foot.

5. Humility before God

16:18: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

The proud trusts in his own understanding, and is easily ensnared.

The humble rightly turns to God for help at the time of temptation.

The devil has least power to fasten temptation on the one that is most humble.

He that is truly humble in Christ, is neither affected with Satan’s proffers, nor terrified with his threats.

The tall tree is easily split and felled by a mighty storm.

In that same storm, the low shrub escapes harm, because it remains firmly rooted in the soil of Christ (Ephesians

God’s promise to Abram had not specifically mentioned Sarai as the mother of the seed (Genesis

However, Abram should have known that his seed would come from his wife, from the one flesh of his marriage (Genesis

Yet, ten years had gone by with no pregnancy (Genesis

Abram was tempted to sin by giving into his wife’s demands (Genesis

Abram was ready to take things into his own hands, because he was no longer patient with God.

Waiting on God to fulfill His promise is always difficult.

But, it is the way of faith — the way a believer should live.

37:7: Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.

We are pilgrims, journeying to a city with foundations (Hebrews 希伯来书 11:10), unable to see it with our physical eyes, but trusting our Father in heaven to get us there.

6. Keep watch and pray

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” (Matthew

5:6. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled.

The one who will not watch against temptations, will certainly fall before the power of temptation.

Satan works most strongly on the Christian when he has allowed himself to become blinded, and distracted, so that he no longer sees the pattern of the days, and no longer discerns the movements of the heart.

When God’s people take their eyes off of Christ, they no longer discern the evil around them, and they are quickly snatched up in it.

Those who remain vigilant against sin, both in themselves and others, bring a great harvest of blessing.

5:20: remember this, whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

3:10: Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

7. Draw new strength from Christ each day (Lamentations

Do not engage Satan in your own strength, but every day draw new strength from Jesus.

Undoubtedly, the soul that engages against any old or new temptation without new strength, and new influences from on high, will fall before the power of the temptation.

10:12: So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

When the Christian feels most confident in his ability to fight sin, then he is in the greatest danger.

One of the dangers we face is that as we grow in our knowledge of God’s Word, we may become more self-confident.

However, growing in the knowledge of God’s Word, should have the opposite effect.

It should make us less self-confident, and more confident in Christ.

Put another way, the more we study God’s Word, the more we should learn to rely upon him, recognizing that God alone has the wisdom we seek.

One may see this in Peter; he rested upon some old received strength.

“Though all men should deny Thee, yet will not I” (Matthew

With this sense of self-confidence, Peter easily fell when faced with a new temptation.

A new temptation brought him to deny Christ three times.

Your strength to stand and overcome must not be expected from past grace received, but from the renewed grace of each day.

Do not trust your past experience to deliver you from present temptation.

You need renewed strength, and renewed wisdom, for each day.

Each Christian was designed to crave new manna each day, not to feed on stored manna (Exodus

Stored manna was yesterday’s provision of grace (and remember that such manna developed worms and rotted (Exodus

The Christian needs a new provision of grace each morning, to face that day’s challenges (Matthew

When the Christian continues to face the day with only his memory of Scripture, and not a new reading of Scripture, he finds that he is not adequately prepared.

In other words, the old message must be made new each day.

The Christian does not need a new message, but a newly applied message.

Without a daily reading of God’s Word, that day will not have the wisdom that is needed to understand God’s purposes in it.

Jesus Himself as the Way of Escape

Remember Jesus:

1. “Who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews

2. Will provide a way of escape that is more persistent (Hebrews

3. Is far more powerful (1 John

4. Is far more satisfying (Hebrews

than what the temptations promise.

Consider the following:

1.When one desires relationship with Jesus more than the torture of his sin, he will quickly turn from that sin.

2. The more attractive Jesus is to you, to more ugly your sin will become to you.

3. The more that one treasures Jesus, the more that he will see the bankruptcy of sin.

4. The more that one feeds on Jesus, the more that he will see sin as a state of starvation.

Such truths unlock a heart held captive to sin.

I believe what John Bunyan means is that temptations which are overcome in the power of Christ, become another opportunity to experience the goodness and grace of Christ.

Application  应用

The Christian should:  基督徒应该:

1.  Be filled with the Spirit, and not let his mind be filled with man-centered thoughts

2. Learn humble obedience, and not how to fill his coffers with silver and gold

A Counseling Note

There is a dangerous teaching in psychology (and in secular counseling, in general) that those who have given into various vices are most suited to counsel others on those same vices.

So, for example, only a recovering alcoholic is qualified to help other alcoholics to recover.

However, this is a falsehood.

The one who routinely gives in to his sin, does not know what it means to do battle with it over a long period of time, and what it means to overcome it.

Such a person may only experience the pull of temptation for a short time, because he finally gives into that temptation.

However, the one who daily resists the allure of sin, gains great insight into the blessing of resistance, to know the wonder of God’s grace to resist.

Thus, the one who has resisted a particular temptation for an hour, a day, a year, a decade, or a lifetime has been given wisdom to see the abundance of God’s blessing in resisting.

The alcoholic might say, “If you were never an alcoholic, then you cannot know what I have gone through, and you cannot possibly counsel me.”

This is a lie of unregenerate reason.

In fact, the one who has resisted that temptation his whole life, has been given great wisdom to know how to help others overcome that sin, and is a living testimony to the blessings of resistance.

So, the Christian who continually resists temptation knows very well what temptation is like.

However, the one who quickly gives into temptation, does not understand the nature of the battle, because he has refused to fight that battle.

Put another way, the one who routinely gives into temptation has sheltered himself from knowing what it means to battle it.

Only the one who resists temptation each day for a lifetime, knows its full force.

Only Jesus resisted temptation perfectly for his entire lifetime.

Yet, he calls his people to do the same, and to experience the richness of that resistance.

Put another way, if one wants to help an alcoholic to be free from his sin, then the one who has resisted that temptation in Christ’s power is best equipped to help such a person.

The one who has resisted is best equipped to help those who have not.

Here’s another point.

The one who has routinely given into his sin, may claim to know more about sin, and the evil that gives rise to it, than the person who has not routinely given into his sin.

This again, is a fallacy.

The one who has daily resisted sin, actually knows more about it, understands its cunning more deeply, because he continues to battle it.
